Detroit 60 Series Injector Sleeve Removal & Installation
Precision cylinder head maintenance guidelines for commercial diesel technicians and fleet overhaul rebuilders.
Servicing leaking injector cups or replacing brass/stainless steel nozzle sleeves on a Detroit Diesel 60 Series engine in-frame? Follow this step-by-step professional workshop procedure to tap old sleeve walls, extract stuck cups without gouging head bores, clean lower seating ledges, apply retaining compound, and drive new sleeves flat to OEM specifications.

Why Improvised Pullers & Improper Drivers Cause Coolant-in-Fuel Disasters
On Detroit Diesel 60 Series engines, injector sleeves form the physical barrier between internal fuel galleries and the surrounding cylinder head coolant jacket. Because fuel injectors seat directly inside these thin-walled metal cups, maintaining perfect concentricity and 100% sealing ring contact is mandatory. Technicians who attempt to pry out old brass or stainless steel sleeves using punch chisels or generic internal pullers face severe overhaul catastrophes. Chisels slip and gouge the precision cast-iron counterbore wall in the cylinder head. Once a head bore is scored, new sleeves cannot seal properly, causing chronic coolant leaks into fuel tanks or combustion blow-by gas pressurizing the cooling system. Furthermore, hammering a new sleeve down using an improper driver or socket deforms the thin top flare lip and distorts the internal nozzle cone seat, preventing the fuel injector from seating flush. Utilizing the 11.40-pound ATC J33840-4 / J33880 Master Kit eliminates these repair failures completely. The included tap and driver thread into the old cup cleanly, allowing the threaded remover to pull the sleeve straight out with 100% axial alignment. During reassembly, the dedicated installer tool drives fresh sleeves down flat against the bottom ledge, applying even circumferential pressure so O-rings and retaining compounds seat perfectly.
The 5-Step Detroit 60 Series Injector Sleeve Service Protocol
- Remove Fuel Injector & Drain Coolant: Drain the engine coolant level below the cylinder head line. Remove the electronic fuel injector assembly and grease the lower injector bore to catch metal chips during tapping.
- Thread Old Sleeve Wall with ATC Tap Assembly: Assemble the ATC tap into the tap driver. Insert the tool into the old sleeve and turn clockwise to cut clean, uniform internal pulling threads into the upper sleeve wall. *Clean out metal cuttings with a vacuum.*
- Thread Remover Tool into Cup & Extract Sleeve: Thread the ATC cup remover tool firmly into the newly tapped sleeve threads. Advance the forcing nut against the bridge frame to pull the old brass or stainless steel sleeve straight up out of the head.
- Thoroughly Clean Cylinder Head Bore & Apply Compound: Solvent-clean the cast-iron cylinder head bore lands and lower copper seating ledge. Apply approved Loctite sleeve retaining compound sparingly to the sealing lands of the fresh sleeve.
- Drive New Sleeve Flat Using ATC Installer Tool: Position the new brass or stainless steel sleeve onto the ATC installer tool tip. Insert the assembly into the clean head bore and drive the sleeve down until it bottoms firm and flat against the head seat ledge. *Verify sleeve lip height and perform a cooling system pressure test before reinstalling fuel injectors.*
PRO-TECH GREASE CHIP TRAP & RETAINING COMPOUND MANDATE:
ALWAYS APPLY HEAVY GREASE TO TAP FLUTES before threading old sleeves! Grease traps metal shavings and prevents metal debris from entering engine cylinders! ALWAYS allow retaining compound to cure per manufacturer instructions before refilling engine coolant!
