Detroit DD13 & DD15 Injector Cup Service Steps
Precision cylinder head service and injector tube cup installation guidelines for commercial diesel mechanics and fleet technicians.
Replacing worn or leaking injector tube cups on a Detroit Diesel DD13 or DD15 engine during an in-frame fuel service or overhaul? Follow this step-by-step professional workshop procedure to expand the ATC J47388A puller collet, extract eroded cups cleanly, clean head bore lands, apply retaining compound, and drive new cups to exact factory depth.

Why Improvised Pullers & Punches Destroy Detroit DD-Series Cylinder Heads
On Detroit Diesel DD13 and DD15 engines, injector tube cups seat directly into the cast-iron cylinder head water jacket. The cup isolates engine coolant from the fuel injector body while transferring combustion heat away from the nozzle tip. Over extended service intervals, chemical cavitation eats away at the thin metal walls, causing coolant to seep past cup seals into cylinder bores. When technicians attempt to extract old cups using slide hammers with makeshift jaws or cold chisels, they risk severe engine damage. Gouging the cast-iron head bore land destroys the smooth sealing surface required for new cups, ensuring permanent coolant leaks. Furthermore, driving new cups into place using hammer punches or unguided sockets cocks the cup, crushing its thin walls and preventing fuel injectors from seating at the correct protrusion height. Utilizing the 3-pound ATC J47388A Remover & Installer Kit (W470589000700 / J47388-A Equivalent) eliminates service risks completely. The expanding collet grips old cups 360 degrees to pull them straight out, while the driver mandrel presses new cups dead-center to exact OEM depth.
The 5-Step Detroit DD13/DD15 Injector Cup Service Protocol
- Remove Fuel Injector & Clean Cup Bore: Drain engine coolant. Remove the fuel injector. Clean loose soot, oil, and debris out of the target injector cup bore using shop solvent and lint-free towels.
- Insert & Expand ATC J47388A Puller Collet: Insert the ATC J47388A extraction collet down into the old injector cup. Tighten the collet expander screw until the hardened lips grip the lower internal rim of the cup securely.
- Extract Old Injector Cup Straight Up: Position the puller bridge over the cylinder head deck. Turn the central forcing nut clockwise with a hand wrench to draw the old injector cup straight upward out of the head bore without scoring cast-iron lands.
- Clean Head Lands & Apply Retaining Compound: Thoroughly clean and wire-brush old sealant residue and scale off the head bore lands. Apply a thin, uniform bead of approved Loctite retaining compound to the upper and lower sealing lands of the new DD13/DD15 injector cup.
- Drive New Injector Cup to Exact Factory Depth: Slide the new cup onto the ATC J47388A installer mandrel. Guide the assembly squarely into the head bore and tap or press the driver until it bottoms firmly against the tool stop, setting the cup to exact OEM depth.
PRO-TECH SEALANT CLEANING & DWELL TIME MANDATE:
ALWAYS CLEAN CAST-IRON BORE LANDS WITH SOLVENT BEFORE APPLYING SEALANT! Oil or rust residue WILL prevent Loctite retaining compound from bonding! ALLOW RETAINING COMPOUND TO CURE PER MANUFACTURER DWELL TIME before refilling coolant or installing fuel injectors!
