CAT C7, C9 & 3126B HEUI Injector Sleeve Cup Service Steps

Precision fuel system maintenance guidelines for heavy diesel rebuilders and fleet mechanics.

Step-by-step close up layout of HEUI injector cup installer tool seated inside a CAT C7 cylinder head

Servicing leaking injector cups or fixing fuel-in-coolant contamination on a Caterpillar C7, C9, or 3126B engine in the chassis? Follow this step-by-step professional workshop procedure to drain coolant, tap and extract old cups using the ATC 151-4832 tool, clean the cylinder head counterbore, apply retaining compound, and seat fresh cups using the ATC 221-9777 installer.

Why Improvised Pullers & Hammers Cause Leaking HEUI Sleeve Seats

On Caterpillar HEUI engines, the fuel injector sleeve cup serves as the critical barrier between high-pressure diesel fuel galleries and engine coolant passages. Because these engines operate under demanding thermal cycles, maintaining a scratch-free cylinder head counterbore and perfect sleeve retention compound seal is mandatory. Technicians who attempt to extract old cups using generic collet slide hammers or cold chisels introduce severe repair risks. Off-center slide hammer impact cocks the cup, gouging deep vertical scratches into the precision cylinder head aluminum or cast-iron wall. Forcing a new cup in with a brass drift or socket crushes the lower seating lip, preventing the cup from making 100% metal-to-metal contact with the lower head shoulder. Scratched counterbores allow coolant to enter fuel galleries continuously, requiring a full engine teardown and expensive cylinder head replacement. Utilizing the 8-pound ATC 151-4832 / 221-9777 Dual-Function Master Kit eliminates these service failures completely. The tap/puller tool threads directly into the old cup to draw it straight up out of the head without wall friction. The installer tool then pilots on the head deck, pressing the fresh sleeve down with smooth, parallel mechanical force until it seats perfectly against the lower factory shoulder.

The 5-Step CAT HEUI Injector Cup Removal & Installation Protocol

  1. Drain Coolant & Remove HEUI Fuel Injector: Drain engine coolant below cylinder head level. Remove the HEUI fuel injector from the target cylinder and clean oil/fuel sludge from the sleeve cup cavity using shop towels.
  2. Thread ATC 151-4832 Remover into Old Sleeve Cup: Thread the tap end of the ATC 151-4832 remover into the interior of the old injector cup. Attach the forcing bridge and turn the upper nut clockwise to extract the cup straight up out of the head.
  3. Clean & Inspect Cylinder Head Counterbore: Thoroughly clean the internal cylinder head counterbore using a wire brush tool and solvent. *Verify the lower seating shoulder is 100% clean and free of old sealant or carbon scale.*
  4. Apply Retaining Compound & Position Fresh Cup: Apply high-temperature OEM-recommended sleeve retaining compound (e.g., Loctite 620) to the lower seating shoulder and upper o-ring groove of the fresh CAT injector cup. Position the cup into the clean head bore.
  5. Seat Fresh Cup with ATC 221-9777 Installer Tool: Insert the ATC 221-9777 driver tool into the new cup. Tap the driver with a brass mallet or advance the central forcing screw until the tool bottoms flush against the cylinder head deck. *Verify the cup rests 100% flush against the lower shoulder before reinstalling the HEUI injector.*

PRO-TECH COOLANT DRAINING & RETAINING COMPOUND MANDATE:

ALWAYS DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT completely below head level before pulling cups! Removing a cup with coolant in the jacket floods cylinder bores and hydraulic-locks pistons! ALWAYS apply recommended retaining compound to fresh cups; dry installation WILL cause immediate coolant-fuel crossover leaks!
