Tech Guide: Mack & Volvo Diesel Injector Sleeve Cup Extraction Steps
Precision fuel system maintenance guidelines for heavy diesel rebuilders and fleet mechanics.
Servicing leaking injector cups or performing a fuel system overhaul on a Mack MP7, MP8, MP10 or Volvo D11, D13, D16 engine? Follow this step-by-step professional workshop procedure to remove fuel injectors, position the ATC 88800387 expansion puller, lock the collet teeth into the sleeve shoulder, and extract cups smoothly without damaging cylinder head bores.

Why Improvised Slide Hammers & Chisels Ruin Commercial Cylinder Heads
On Mack MP-Series and Volvo FM/D-Series engines, injector sleeve cups seat deep inside the cylinder head fuel gallery. Because these cups isolate engine coolant from fuel injectors, maintaining a smooth, scratch-free bore surface is mandatory for new sleeve installation. Technicians who attempt to pry out old cups using cold chisels, screwdrivers, or cheap slide hammer collets introduce catastrophic shop risks. Off-center slide hammer impact cocks the sleeve inside the bore, wedging copper or steel walls against the head casting. Forcing a wedged sleeve gouges deep vertical scratches into the precision head bore. Scratched head bores prevent fresh sleeve o-rings from sealing, causing permanent coolant-in-fuel leaks that require replacing the entire cylinder head assembly. Utilizing the 2-pound ATC 88800387 Replacement Cup Puller eliminates these service failures completely. Designed specifically to thread into internal expansion arbors, the puller jaws expand 360-degrees inside the lower cup shoulder. Turning the forcing nut applies pure, centered vertical lift, popping the sleeve free from its seating groove without side friction or wall contact.
The 5-Step Mack & Volvo Injector Sleeve Extraction Protocol
- Remove Fuel Injector & Drain Coolant: Drain engine coolant below the level of the cylinder head. Remove the unit fuel injector from the target cylinder and clean fuel/oil residue from the sleeve cavity.
- Insert ATC 88800387 Puller into Injector Sleeve: Lower the ATC 88800387 cup puller assembly down into the sleeve tube until the collet expansion shoulder reaches the bottom interior ledge of the sleeve.
- Expand Collet Teeth into Lower Sleeve Shoulder: Hold the puller body and turn the expansion arbor screw clockwise to expand the tool teeth 360-degrees tight against the internal sleeve wall. *Verify the puller teeth have engaged the bottom lip securely.*
- Apply Vertical Extraction Force: Attach the main forcing bridge/arbor assembly over the puller body. Lubricate the forcing threads with clean oil. Turn the upper forcing nut clockwise using a manual wrench to draw the puller and cup upward out of the cylinder head bore.
- Inspect Cylinder Head Bore & Clean Seating Counterbore: Remove the extracted sleeve cup from the ATC 88800387 tool. Clean the cylinder head bore thoroughly using lint-free shop towels and fine Scotch-Brite to prepare the bore for fresh sleeve installation.
PRO-TECH COOLANT DRAINING & MANUAL WRENCH MANDATE:
ALWAYS DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT completely below head level before pulling sleeves! Removing a sleeve with coolant in the jacket floods cylinder bores and hydraulic-locks pistons! ALWAYS advance forcing nuts using MANUAL HAND TOOLS; never use pneumatic impact wrenches, which can strip collet expansion threads!
