Detroit Series 60 Injector Removal Steps

Precision fuel system disassembly and injector extraction guidelines for commercial diesel mechanics and fleet technicians.

Step-by-step close up layout of ATC J47372 injector puller mounted on a Detroit Series 60 cylinder head deck

Extracting stubborn or carbon-bound unit fuel injectors from a Detroit Diesel 11.1L, 12.7L, or 14L Series 60 engine block? Follow this step-by-step professional workshop procedure to remove hold-down bolts, attach the ATC J47372 puller collar, align the bridge plate squarely, advance the forcing screw smoothly, and lift injectors out without damaging copper sleeves.

Why Pry Bars & Heel Bars Destroy Detroit Series 60 Cylinder Heads

On Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines, fuel injectors are held in place by hold-down clamps and seated into thin-walled copper tube sleeves. Over time, combustion blow-by passes upper seal rings, baking fuel varnish and soot around the lower injector body. When technicians attempt to pry injectors out using pry bars or heel bars, they apply uncontrolled prying force against the cylinder head deck or valve train. This off-center force cocks the injector body sideways inside the sleeve. The hard steel injector body gouges deep gouges into the soft copper tube or cracks the sleeve lower seal seat. A damaged copper sleeve allows engine coolant to fill the cylinder or leak into the oil pan upon startup, requiring an expensive sleeve replacement procedure. Utilizing the 5-pound ATC J47372 Injector Puller (OEM J-47372 Equivalent) prevents sleeve damage entirely. By anchoring the bridge plate flat over the cylinder head deck, the central forcing screw draws the injector straight up along its axis, breaking carbon bonds cleanly.

The 5-Step Detroit Series 60 Fuel Injector Extraction Protocol

  1. Remove Valve Cover & Injector Hold-Down Bolt: Remove the rocker cover and fuel lines. Unbolt and remove the OEM injector hold-down clamp bolt and clamp from the target cylinder.
  2. Attach ATC J47372 Puller Collar to Injector Body: Slide the puller collar of the ATC J47372 tool securely onto the injector body shoulder per tooling instructions. Ensure the collar grips the injector lip 100% flush.
  3. Position Puller Bridge Plate Squarely on Head Deck: Set the ATC J47372 bridge plate legs squarely onto the flat mating surfaces of the cylinder head deck. Ensure the forcing screw aligns parallel with the injector centerline.
  4. Turn Forcing Screw to Lift Injector Smoothly: Apply clean engine oil to the forcing screw threads. Turn the central forcing nut clockwise using a hand wrench or socket. The tool will pull the injector straight upward out of the copper sleeve.
  5. Inspect Copper Sleeve & Clean Bore Lands: Once the injector is extracted, clean fuel varnish and carbon out of the copper sleeve using approved cleaning swabs. Inspect the sleeve bore for scratches before installing new injector O-rings.

PRO-TECH FORCING SCREW LUBRICATION & HAND WRENCH MANDATE:

ALWAYS LUBRICATE FORCING SCREW THREADS WITH CLEAN ENGINE OIL before applying puller torque! ALWAYS TURN FORCING SCREWS WITH A HAND WRENCH or ratchet to monitor extraction resistance—never spin forcing screws at high speed with heavy air impact guns!
