Caterpillar 3406 & C15 Liner Installation Steps
Precision engine liner installation and block assembly guidelines for commercial diesel mechanics and fleet rebuilders.
Installing wet cylinder liners into a Caterpillar 3406 or C15 engine block during a major overhaul or in-frame rebuild? Follow this step-by-step professional workshop procedure to clean block bores, lubricate lower rubber seals, mount the M20104-B liner press, advance the forcing screw smoothly, and verify counterbore seat contact without tearing lower O-rings.

Why "Impact Hammering" Liners Causes Engine Overhaul Disasters
On Caterpillar heavy-duty diesel engines, cylinder liners isolate combustion chambers while channeling engine coolant around cylinder walls. The lower end of each liner is sealed against the block crankcase using flexible rubber O-rings and a crevice seal. Because these rubber seals fit tightly against the block bore, lowering the liner requires overcome friction resistance. Technicians who attempt to drive liners down using wood blocks and brass sledges introduce major structural damage. Hammer blows cock the liner sideways inside the bore. As the tilted liner is forced downward, the sharp edge of the block chamfer acts like a razor blade, cutting off a section of the lower O-ring. Even worse, impact shocks can hairline-fracture the delicate upper liner flange or distort the roundness of the cylinder bore. A distorted bore causes piston ring binding, scuffing, and premature oil consumption. Utilizing the 12-pound M20104-B Heavy Duty Liner Press eliminates these installation hazards entirely. By bolting the bridge plate squarely to the block deck, the forcing screw pushes the liner straight down with smooth, linear mechanical force, allowing rubber seals to seat intact every time.
The 5-Step Caterpillar 3406/C15 Liner Installation Protocol
- Clean Engine Block Bores & Counterbores: Thoroughly clean upper counterbores and lower O-ring sealing lands inside the block. Wire-brush scale and wipe clean with solvent to ensure no grit is trapped behind lower seals.
- Install & Lubricate Lower Rubber Seals: Install fresh OEM Caterpillar crevice seals and lower O-rings into the liner grooves. Coat the seals and lower block chamfer liberally with approved liquid soap or rubber assembly lubricant.
- Lower Cylinder Liner & Position M20104-B Press Bridge: Lower the cylinder liner carefully into the block bore until lower O-rings contact the upper chamfer. Mount the M20104-B bridge plate over adjacent head bolt holes and thread anchor bolts securely into the deck.
- Advance Forcing Screw to Press Liner Home: Center the M20104-B press plate squarely on the top rim of the cylinder liner. Turn the central forcing screw clockwise using a hand wrench to press the liner down smoothly until the flange seats firmly against the counterbore ledge.
- Remove Tool & Verify Clamped Protrusion: Unbolt and remove the M20104-B liner press. Install hold-down bolts and washers to clamp the liner, then measure cylinder liner protrusion using a dial depth gauge across four quadrants to confirm OEM specification before installing the head gasket.
PRO-TECH RUBBER LUBRICATION & NO-IMPACT MANDATE:
ALWAYS USE APPROVED RUBBER ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT on lower liner O-rings! Never use petroleum grease that swells and degrades rubber seals! NEVER USE HAMMERS OR MALLETS TO DRIVE LINERS! Impact force WILL shear lower O-rings and cause coolant leaks!
