When a stud snaps off inside the cylinder head, attempting to drill out the broken piece without rigid guidance is extremely risky. Because broken stud faces are uneven and work-hardened, a hand-held drill bit slips off center within seconds. Once off center, the bit carves into the soft cast-iron threads of the cylinder head, destroying the threaded bore and leading to permanent exhaust leaks or water jacket breakthroughs.
