The injector cup in a Caterpillar HEUI cylinder head acts as a sealed divider between high-pressure fuel supply rails and the engine coolant jacket. When replacing a damaged cup, the old sleeve must be threaded and extracted cleanly, and the cast-iron head bore landing must be thoroughly cleared of all scale, dried sealant, and corrosion. Attempting to drive new cups into position using improvised drivers or brass drifts is a major service error. Off-angle striking buckles the thin-walled stainless steel cup, deforming the lower seating cone or creating micro-gaps along the retaining compound seal ring. The 5-Step Injector Cup Service Protocol
- Teardown & Fluid Isolation: Drain the engine cooling system completely and isolate the fuel supply. Remove the valve cover, oil rail, and target HEUI fuel injector. Plug the lower cylinder oil drain port to prevent debris from entering the combustion chamber.

- Seat the Fresh Cup (Using 221-9777 Tool): Place the fresh cup squarely over the installer mandrel of the 221-9777 tool. Lower the assembly down into the clean head bore. Using a brass-headed driver mallet or mechanical press screw, apply steady, parallel downward force on the installer drive head until the cup bottoms out solidly against the lower bore stop. Allow the retaining compound to cure fully before reinstalling the fuel injector.
