Why Impact Seating Destroys Cummins ISX Cylinder Liner Seals
The mid-stop wet cylinder liners on Cummins ISX15 and QSX15 engines rely on precise mechanical fitment and lower rubber D-ring seals to separate engine oil from cooling passages. During short-block reassembly, forcing liners down using heavy mallets or unguided timber blocks is a major cause of early engine failure. When hit with a hammer, the liner tilts slightly inside the tight block bore. This cocking action rolls or cuts the rubber D-ring seal against the sharp edge of the block bore landing. The damage remains invisible to the mechanic until the overhaul is finished and the engine is filled with coolant—resulting in immediate internal coolant leaks into the oil pan. The 5-Step Cylinder Liner Pressing Protocol
