Tech Guide: Cummins ISX15 Anti-Polishing Ring Service

Precision top-deck cylinder maintenance guidelines for high-volume commercial freight fleets.

Step-by-step layout of an anti-polishing sleeve removal ring expanding inside a heavy truck cylinder sleeve

Overhauling a bottom-end or replacing rings on an ISX platform? Learn the proper, step-by-step professional method to extract and install carbon scraper rings with the ATC20187 tool set.

Why Freehand Screwdriver Prying Ruins Upper Cylinder Lands

The anti-polishing ring rests inside a highly precise counterbore groove at the very top of the Cummins ISX liner. When a line mechanic attempts to dig a stuck carbon-bound APR loose using a flathead screwdriver or unguided pry crowbar, the focal force is entirely localized. This intense side-pressure easily chips the fragile upper edge of the cast-iron cylinder sleeve or leaves micro-gouges along the liner deck sealing face. Any surface defect here will prevent a fresh head gasket from crushing uniformly, causing rapid compression leakage or engine oil cross-contamination down the line. Utilizing a custom-fit expansion ring system like the ATC20187 applies a balanced 360-degree radial outward wedge, popping the ring up seamlessly without touching the soft cast surfaces.

The 5-Step APR Removal & Re-Seating Protocol

  1. Workspace Cleanout & Sludge Triage: Scrape away thick carbon ridge deposits from the top internal zone of the liner above the piston crown. Clean the ring groove thoroughly with solvent to ensure your tools can seat perfectly into the component transitions.
  2. Engage the 5299447 Snap Rings: Compress the specialized ATC20187 removal snap ring assembly by hand and lower it down into the cylinder well. Let the spring expand outward until it locks flatly and securely underneath the internal bottom ledge lip of the anti-polishing ring.
  3. Execute Safe Piston Vertical Travel: Rotate the engine's crankshaft manually from underneath using an engine barring tool. As the piston travels upward through its stroke, the flat top land of the piston crown will push directly against the locked snap ring, driving the carbon scraper ring straight out of the top cylinder counterbore without any chassis binding.
  4. Clean and Prep Counterbore Channels: Take out the old ring and the tool. Polish the cylinder liner's top counterbore shoulder obsessively using a fine abrasive pad until bright metal is exposed. Lubricate the perimeter of your brand-new anti-polishing ring lightly with clean engine oil.
  5. Drive the Fresh APR to Seat: Settle the fresh carbon scraper ring flatly into the top of the bore. Place the heavy ATC20187/5299339 ring compressor adapter block over the sleeve. Use a flat driving driver block to tap the ring uniformly downward until it sits flush and square inside its machined block seat, ready for final piston assembly.

CRITICAL BENCH SEATING DIRECTIVE:

Never attempt to force a piston assembly back down through an anti-polishing ring that has been installed cocked or out-of-square! If the APR is tilted within its counterbore landing by even a hair, the piston rings will jam or break during insertion. Always verify that the top face of the ring sits completely flush with the top of the liner deck before installing your piston compressor.
