Tech Guide: DD5 Engine Pre-Lubrication & Priming
Don't leave your rebuild to chance. Learn the professional procedure for priming the DD5 oil system using the ATCW936589006300 adapter.
Why Priming is Non-Negotiable
On the Detroit Diesel DD5 platform, the tolerance for oil starvation is zero. The valve train and camshaft journals are highly sensitive to initial friction. Standard cranking might take 10-15 seconds to build full pressure after a service—seconds where your new components are at high risk. Using the ATCW936589006300 ensures that the moment the engine fires, the pressure is already present in the galleries.
The Pre-Lube Checklist
- Locate the Port: Find the designated oil gallery access port on the DD5 engine block.
- Install the ATCW936589006300: Thread the adapter into the port and ensure a secure, leak-free connection.
- Connect the Tank: Attach your pressurized oil priming tank to the adapter.
- Introduce Pressure: Pump clean engine oil into the system until you see a drop in tank pressure or hear oil reaching the top end (rockers).
- Verify Pressure: Monitor the dashboard or an external gauge to confirm that oil has filled the main galleries before attempting the first start.
PRO-TIP:
Priming isn't just for rebuilds. If a DD5 has been sitting for more than 3 months, the oil can drain back entirely. Use the ATCW936589006300 to refresh the system and protect the camshaft before a long-term storage startup.
