Tech Guide: Detroit DD13/DD15/DD16 Injector Replacement
Precision top-end fuel component service guidelines for fleet mechanics.
Dealing with hard carbon lockups during a top-end service on a Detroit engine? Learn the professional technician sequence to extract injectors safely using the ATC J47391 tool.

Why Multi-Directional Prying Destalls Common-Rail Seals
The fuel injectors inside a Detroit DD15 engine operate at intense common-rail pressures, requiring precise seating depth and alignment. If an injector body becomes lodged, trying to wiggle it loose with a pry bar causes immediate collateral damage. This uneven rocking motion forces the hard steel body of the injector against the softer bore of the cylinder head, creating microscopic gouges. When you drop a new injector into a scored bore, the copper crush washer will fail to seal properly, allowing combustion gases to blow past the seal and quickly fuel-log the crankcase. Utilizing the specialized ATC J47391 tool ensures that pulling force stays perfectly straight, shielding the bore wall and creating a clean surface for your replacement seals.
The 5-Step Injector Removal & Bore Prep Protocol
- Component Strip & Line Access: Disconnect the battery terminals. Clean the valve cover area thoroughly to prevent dirt ingress. Remove the overhead rocker cover, take off the high-pressure fuel lines, and unbolt the factory injector hold-down bracket.
- Position the ATC J47391 Puller: Slide the pulling jaws of the ATC J47391 tool firmly onto the shoulder slots of the injector body. Align the tool's heavy support bridge so it sits flush across the cylinder head deck casting.
- Secure the Draw Hardware: Hand-thread the center draw screw downward until the tool structure sits snugly against the head surface. Verify that the alignment is perfectly straight to avoid any angular tension during extraction.
- Execute Mechanical Extraction: Hold the puller base steady with an open-end wrench. Use a socket or ratchet to turn the primary draw nut clockwise. Apply steady, gradual pressure—the carbon-locked injector will pop out of the cylinder well cleanly.
- Bore Cleanout & Sealing Reassembly: Vacuum all loose carbon scale out of the empty cylinder bore. Use a specialized bore brush to clean the copper seat down to bare metal. Drop in a fresh OEM crush washer, lubricate the new injector O-rings with clean oil, and torque the hold-down bolt to exact factory specifications.
CRITICAL MECHANICAL COMPLIANCE WARNING:
Never use an air impact wrench on the J47391 center draw screw! The high-frequency shock waves from an impact tool can snap the delicate fuel line inlet ports off a carbon-seized injector or strip the puller threads entirely. Always use hand tools to pull injectors smoothly and safely.
