Tech Guide: Converting & Machining Series 60 Counterbores
Dealing with recurring head gasket leaks on a 12.7L or 14L Detroit Diesel? Learn how to convert your tool setup using the ATC30144 plate to machine block counterbores safely.

Why Flat Machined Counterbores Overrule Sanding
Attempting to remove erosion marks or carbon crust from a Detroit block ledge using hand files or emery paper is a critical mistake. Hand cleanup always induces slight waves or slopes on the ledge casting. When a repair shim is laid down on an un-square surface, the cylinder liner flange bends under the massive compression load of the head bolts, sparking a sudden crack right below the top lip. Using a dedicated machining driver configuration like the ATC30144 plate aligned flat to the engine deck forces the cutter bit to make perfectly flat, square cuts, ensuring your shims support the liner profile flawlessly.
The 5-Step Tool Conversion & Cutting Sequence
- Tool Frame Validation & Prep: Wipe down your **PT-2250** or **M50133** counterbore cutter driver unit. Check that all components are free of old cast filings. Secure your workspace by ensuring you are **not** trying to configure this adapter on a PT-2050D model, as it will not fit.
- Mount the ATC30144 Plate: Bolt the precision-ground ATC30144 shim cutter plate onto the bottom center hub of your tool chassis. Tighten the retaining bolts securely to establish a rigid connection that eliminates any operational cutter vibration.
- Set the Cutting Tool Diameter: Fit a premium carbide cutting bit into the adapter holder mechanism. Use a micrometer or specialized setting fixture to set the radius path, confirming it maps perfectly across the counterbore step of the target Detroit Diesel 60 Series cylinder block.
- Execute Controlled Machining: Center the fully converted tool assembly over the engine deck bore and anchor it flat to the block using the primary cylinder head bolt holes. Feed the cutting head down until it kisses the worn ledge. Rotate the drive handles slowly, keeping a steady, smooth rhythm to slice away fretted cast iron until the surface is completely flat.
- Clean & Document Depth Metrics: Vacuum all metal shavings out of the block bore cavity. Wipe the newly machined counterbore clean with solvent. Use a precision depth indicator gauge to calculate the exact repair shim thickness required to return your Detroit liner protrusion back to precise factory specification limits.
CRITICAL REPAIR METRIC:
Always apply a few drops of clean cutting oil to the carbide bit during machining. Cutting cast iron entirely dry increases bit wear and can cause minor surface hardening on the ledge, making accurate depth adjustment more difficult on subsequent fine passes.
