Detroit Series 60 Injector Extraction Steps
Precision overhead maintenance guidelines for commercial fleet and Class 8 mechanics.
Replacing fuel injectors, servicing copper sleeves, or conducting cylinder diagnostics on a Detroit Series 60 engine? Follow this step-by-step professional workshop procedure to unbolt hold-down clamps, mount the ATC J47372 puller, and extract injectors cleanly without damaging head bores.

Why Prying Fuel Injectors Destroys Cylinder Head Copper Sleeves
Electronic unit injectors on Detroit Series 60 engines seat tightly into thin-walled copper sleeves pressed inside the cast-iron cylinder head. These sleeves separate engine coolant passages from combustion chambers. Over extended oil drain intervals and high thermal cycling, hard carbon packs around the tip of the injector body, locking it inside the sleeve. When a technician attempts to leverage the injector out using pry bars or heel bars against the rocker shaft, the side load wedges the injector body diagonally against the soft copper wall. This gouges vertical grooves into the copper sleeve or breaks the anaerobic seal at the lower sleeve landing. When the engine is reassembled with new injectors, high-pressure coolant leaks past the damaged sleeve straight into the oil pan—leading to catastrophic bearing damage. Utilizing a dedicated bridge puller like the 5-pound ATC J47372 anchors extraction force directly over the center of the injector body, drawing it straight up along a 100% vertical axis. This releases carbon lockup cleanly without touching or gouging the copper sleeve walls.
The 5-Step Injector Removal Protocol
- Safety Setup & Rocker Shaft Clearance: Lock out ignition and disable starting circuits. Remove the valve rocker cover. Remove the rocker arm assembly for the target cylinder per Detroit Diesel service manual instructions to gain clear access to the EUI.
- Remove Injector Hold-Down Bolt & Crab: Unbolt and remove the injector hold-down crab clamp bolt and hold-down bracket. Clean oil scale and carbon debris off the top shoulder of the injector body.
- Mount ATC J47372 Puller Assembly: Position the legs of the ATC J47372 puller bridge securely onto the cylinder head deck landing over the target injector. Engage the puller jaws or central adapter firmly under the injector hold-down shoulder.
- Execute Smooth Vertical Extraction: Lube the central forcing screw threads of the ATC J47372 tool with clean engine oil or anti-seize. Turn the forcing screw clockwise using a manual hand socket or breaker bar. The tool will pull the carbon-baked injector straight up out of the copper sleeve smoothly.
- Inspect Injector Bore & Copper Sleeve: Lift the free injector out of the well. Vacuum out trapped diesel fuel and carbon scale from the bottom of the sleeve bore. Inspect the copper sleeve wall with a bore scope to confirm zero scoring or water leaks before installing fresh O-rings and replacement injectors.
PRO-TECH MANUAL HAND WRENCH MANDATE:
Always advance the central forcing screw of the ATC J47372 puller using manual hand wrenches or breaker bars! Never use high-speed pneumatic impact wrenches on the forcing screw; excessive impact speed can strip tool threads or shock-fracture solenoid housings on stubborn, carbon-locked injectors!
