The Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine family underwent major evolutionary updates over its production lifespan. One critical distinction technicians must recognize during short-block servicing is the architectural difference between non-EGR engine blocks (produced prior to late-2002) and later EGR-equipped models. Non-EGR Series 60 cylinder liners utilize specific wall thicknesses and lower crevice-seal land heights that match the shoe geometry of the M30143 (J-35791) puller tool. Attempting to pull non-EGR liners using universal slide hammers or improper puller legs causes the pulling feet to slip off the bottom rim of the liner. When a tool slips under high tension, it violently impact-loads the cast-iron liner wall, cracking the sleeve or gouging the lower engine block sealing bore.
