Tech Guide: Setting Series 60 Cam Gear Lash

By Blog Admin

Accurate backlash is critical for timing and gear train longevity. Learn the professional way to use the ATC J35596 on Detroit 60 Series engines.

Adjusting Detroit Series 60 gear lash with ATC J35596

Why Gear Lash is Non-Negotiable

The camshaft gear on a Detroit Series 60 engine drives the entire valve and injector sequence. If the lash (the space between the gear teeth) is not set precisely, the resulting "backlash" creates vibrations that can shatter gear teeth and throw off engine timing. The ATC J35596 acts as a mechanical wedge/adjuster, providing the steady pressure needed to hold the gear in the exact position required for a perfect dial indicator reading.

The 5-Step Lash Adjustment Procedure

  1. Prep: Ensure the camshaft gear and mating adjustable idler gear are clean and free of debris.
  2. Tool Install: Position the ATC J35596 tool according to the Detroit Diesel service manual instructions for your specific gear train configuration.
  3. Wedge & Adjust: Use the tool to apply controlled pressure, moving the gear into the mating gear until the desired backlash is achieved.
  4. Verification: Use a dial indicator to verify the lash at four different points (every 90 degrees) around the gear.
  5. Final Torque: Lock down the gear train fasteners while the J35596 maintains the set position to prevent "shift" during final torquing.

PRO-TIP:

Always check your gear lash after the engine has reached a uniform temperature if performing an in-frame adjustment. For overhauls, ensure the block and gears are at the same ambient temperature for the most accurate results.
