Why Asymmetrical Chain Angles Cause Post-Rebuild Head Gasket Leaks

Modern aerodynamic commercial trucks feature steep hood slants and deeply recessed engine bays where the rear of the Cummins cylinder head sits completely underneath the firewall. When a mechanic tries to pull this head using an unguided chain sling, the hoist pulls at an angle to clear the firewall. This off-center force creates lateral drag, sliding the massive cast-iron head across the engine block instead of lifting it straight up. This grinding action cuts fine scratches into the metal sealing lands and bends the solid steel dowel pins. When a new head gasket is installed over these micro-gouges, fluid will seep past the fire ring.
