Why Separating Pre-Assembled Mack Seals Guarantees Instant Failure
Replacement rear main seal packages for Mack E6 and E7 engines are shipped with the oversized lip seal pre-fitted around the hardened steel wear sleeve. A common technician error is attempting to separate these two pieces before installation—either to press the wear sleeve first or to lube the seal lip. *DO NOT REMOVE THE SEAL FROM THE WEAR SLEEVE!* Modern Mack main seals utilize dry-running PTFE (Teflon) sealing elements. Teflon relies on material memory and must be installed completely bone-dry over a clean, dry crankshaft snout. If the seal is removed from the sleeve or lubricated with grease or engine oil, the Teflon lip will deform or fail to contract properly around the wear ring, leading to an immediate oil blowout upon startup. Utilizing the 20-pound M50112-A installer mounts the pre-assembled unit as one piece, applying parallel axial pressure to seat the wear sleeve on the shaft and the seal into the flywheel housing bore simultaneously.
The 5-Step Mack Rear Main Seal & Wear Sleeve Protocol
- Flywheel Teardown & Flange Cleaning: Remove the transmission, clutch, and flywheel. Scrape away old sealant, oil glaze, and scale from the crankshaft snout and rear housing bore using solvent. Ensure the crankshaft flange is 100% clean and bone-dry down to bare metal.
- Mount the M50112-A 3-Pin Guide Plate: Thread the 3 precision guide pins of the M50112-A tool into the matching flywheel mounting bolt holes on the crankshaft flange. Tighten the pins by hand to ensure the tool base sits dead-flat and concentric with the crankshaft centerline.
- Stage the Pre-Assembled Seal & Wear Ring: Carefully place the pre-assembled Mack seal and wear sleeve unit over the guide pins. *CRITICAL: Do NOT separate the seal from the wear ring, and do NOT apply oil or grease to the Teflon seal lip or shaft snout!*
- Position the Driver Plate & Central Forcing Nut: Slide the heavy M50112-A driver plate over the guide pins until it rests squarely against the seal/sleeve assembly. Thread the central forcing nut onto the center mandrel rod by hand until it settles flat against the driver plate.
- Execute Controlled Mechanical Pressing: Using a manual 1/2" drive socket or breaker bar, turn the central forcing nut clockwise in a smooth, continuous motion. The driver plate will press the wear sleeve onto the shaft and the seal into the housing simultaneously. Continue turning until the tool flanged shoulder bottoms out flat against the guide stop, setting exact OEM depth. Back off the nut, unbolt the pins, and reassemble the drivetrain. Continuous rest period: Allow the engine to rest undisturbed for at least 2 to 4 hours post-installation to allow the dry Teflon seal lip to relax and adapt to the wear sleeve before cranking or barring the crankshaft!

Never apply grease, oil, or assembly lube to the Teflon seal lip or crankshaft snout on Mack E6/E7 rear main replacements!
