DD5 Engine Service: Finding TDC with Tool W936589001500

By Blog Admin

Accuracy in the shop translates to reliability on the road. Learn the professional procedure for using the W936589001500 pin to locate TDC on Detroit Diesel DD5 engines.

Detroit Diesel DD5 Crankshaft Positioning Pin alignment

Why Mechanical Pins Beat Visual Marks

Parallax error—the difference in the apparent position of a mark when viewed from different angles—can lead to 1–3 degrees of timing error. In a high-compression DD5, that error can cause valve-to-piston interference or poor injector spray timing. The W936589001500 eliminates this by using a physical pin-and-hole engagement that only allows for one correct position.

The TDC Locating Procedure

  1. Access the Timing Port: Locate and remove the inspection plug on the flywheel housing.
  2. Manual Rotation: Use a barring tool to rotate the engine in the direction of operation (clockwise from front).
  3. Approach TDC: Monitor visual marks until cylinder #1 is approaching Top Dead Center on the compression stroke.
  4. Engage the Pin: Insert the W936589001500 into the port. Slowly rotate the crankshaft until you feel the pin drop into the machined notch on the flywheel.
  5. Lock and Verify: Once seated, the crankshaft is now mechanically locked. You can now safely perform camshaft gear service, injector timing, or valve lash adjustments.

Critical Safety Warning

ALWAYS REMOVE THE PIN:

Never attempt to start or turn the engine with the starter while the W936589001500 is engaged. Doing so will result in the pin shearing or catastrophic damage to the flywheel housing and crankshaft.
