The drive gear on a John Deere 6.8L engine is a precision component. Even a minor nick from an improvised puller can create gear noise or, worse, lead to metal shavings in the gear train. Removal Procedure Checklist

  1. Access: Remove the injection pump access cover from the front timing plate.
  2. Locking: Ensure the engine and pump are pinned at TDC if you plan to reuse the pump.
  3. Bolt Attachment: Align the JDG1560 plate with the threaded holes in the gear hub and install the mounting bolts.
  4. Extraction: Tighten the central forcing screw or use the puller hardware to draw the gear forward. You will hear a "pop" as the taper bond breaks.
  5. Verification: Inspect the pump shaft woodruff key and gear hub for any signs of wear before the new pump is installed.
