Technician’s Guide: Safe Removal of JD 6068 Injection Pump Gears
Replacing an injection pump shouldn't involve a hammer. Learn the professional way to separate drive gears on 6.8L engines using the JDG1560 tool.
Why Gear Teeth Preservation is Essential
The drive gear on a John Deere 6.8L engine is a precision component. Even a minor nick from an improvised puller can create gear noise or, worse, lead to metal shavings in the gear train. The JDG1560 puller plate applies pressure only to the hub, keeping the teeth completely untouched and safe for reassembly.
Removal Procedure Checklist
- Access: Remove the injection pump access cover from the front timing plate.
- Locking: Ensure the engine and pump are pinned at TDC if you plan to reuse the pump.
- Bolt Attachment: Align the JDG1560 plate with the threaded holes in the gear hub and install the mounting bolts.
- Extraction: Tighten the central forcing screw or use the puller hardware to draw the gear forward. You will hear a "pop" as the taper bond breaks.
- Verification: Inspect the pump shaft woodruff key and gear hub for any signs of wear before the new pump is installed.

TECH TIP:
When pulling gears that have been in service for years, apply a small amount of penetrating oil to the shaft taper 15 minutes before using the JDG1560. This reduces the mechanical stress required and ensures a much smoother separation.
