Tech Guide: Safe Cylinder Head Removal for Volvo & Mack

By Blog Admin

Swapping a head on a Mack MP8 or Volvo D13 inside a VHD or MRU frame? Learn the professional workflow for using the ATC 88800188 bracket to bypass clearance issues.

Why Chain Angles Matter During Top-End Service

Modern heavy-duty truck chassis like the Volvo VAH or Mack LR feature tight engine compartments with minimal overhead height. When you use standard lifting chains, the "V-angle" of the chain takes up critical vertical space and often pulls the cylinder head toward the firewall as you lift. This side-loading energy is exactly what snaps dowel pins or scars the block deck. Utilizing a rigid lifting bracket like the ATC 88800188 with its application-specific extension keeps the hoist point directly above the head’s center of mass. This allows for a vertical, linear lift that requires less overhead travel, making it perfect for in-frame overhauls where every inch of clearance counts.

The 5-Step Heavy Head Hoisting Protocol

  1. Tear Down & Port Cleaning: Strip all fuel lines, rocker assemblies, and secondary components. Clean the structural lifting bolt holes on the cylinder head casting obsessively to remove grease and carbon build-up.
  2. Bolt Down the 88800174 Base: Position the primary lifting base directly onto the head. Thread the high-tensile mounting bolts fully into the head casting. Verify that the bracket is sitting completely flush to ensure an even load transfer.
  3. Install the Extension Profile: For high-cab or narrow-clearance models like the CXU or TD, attach the included extension arm. This provides the necessary offset to clear obstructions like firewalls or intake plumbing while maintaining perfect vertical balance.
  4. Engage the Hoist Hook: Connect your workshop hoist hook to the designated center-eye on the bracket. Slowly take up the slack in the chain until the hoist tension begins to support the weight of the head. Double-check that all head bolts are removed!
  5. Execute the Vertical Lift: Operate the hoist in slow, rhythmic increments. As the head breaks the gasket seal, the ATC bracket will keep it perfectly parallel to the block. Lift until the head clears the dowel pins entirely, then swing the head cleanly away to the repair stand.

CRITICAL HOIST TIP:

Never attempt to use the lifting bracket if any of the mounting bolt threads are damaged or stripped. Attempting to lift a 200+ lb cylinder head on a partially thread-engaged bolt is a massive workplace safety hazard. Always Chase the head’s lifting threads with a tap before mounting the bracket to guarantee a full, secure lock.

Perfect Balance. Faster In-Frame Overhauls.
